“We aren’t pulling people off the street, or secretly video-taping them, but we see lots of people everyday who might not look their best maybe because they just don’t have the time or the money to keep their looks fresh. But it’s amazing what a new hairstyle, outfit and makeup consultation will do for self-esteem. The Style Revolution Makeover Event is looking for 4 women and 1 man in need of a makeover or a new style, and couples are welcome to apply. How a School Teacher Saved Man’s Best Friend... and How You Can Too

Edmonton, AB- Spencer Sekyer is a school teacher known for his passion for teaching and his compassion for animals – dogs in particular. He’s spent years working with underprivileged children all over the world, most recently in Afghanistan, where a chance encounter with a stray dog resulted in the rescue of seven amazing dogs arriving in Canada this week. But his work isn’t over yet.

“Thanks to some great organizations - especially NOWZAD - and donations, the seven female dogs will be arriving in Calgary on Friday Jan 6^th and then coming up here to my acreage in Sherwood Park. Originally, we had homes picked out for all of them, but since it took a year to organize this, some of those plans didn’t work. Now my aim is to make sure we find new forever homes for all of them, and help them adjust to their Canadian life!” says Sekyer, who has spent the last year fund-raising and making arrangements for their rescue.

For Spencer, rescuing these animals was about being able to do something good for the stray dogs that are abandoned and usually have short lives on the streets of Kabul. As an educator, he spent his days teaching Afghan street kids and is currently teaching in Sherwood Park showing the level of compassion he has for both the humans and animals in need.

“Because of my love for these animals and the community that they live in, I took the initial steps to save them, and if I can do it, anyone can reach out and help rescue less fortunate animals. All they have to do is have the passion and perseverance to do it."

If you have experience with rescue dogs and are willing to leash train and work with them in their new environment, Spencer would be more than happy to consider you as a new owner for one or more dogs. (A thorough interview will be required.)

3) Support your local rescue association by volunteering your time, consider fostering animals to help raise the rate of adoptions, donate money to a rescue association on your birthday in lieu of gifts, use social media to connect with other passionate animal lovers, write on your blog and contribute your knowledge to other blogs to benefit pet owners. Donate to NOWZAD the animal shelter in Afghanistan that helped and housed these dogs for the past year

4) Write to your local government representative about shelter support, unfair bylaws, and other timely animal issues. For instance, new bylaws in Rosemont, Montreal and Richmond, B.C. have outlawed the opening of new pet stores that sell dogs, opting to promote the adoption of shelter dogs to benefit their communities. Lobby to make this a common practice in all Canadian cities.

Resolve to Raise Your Self-Esteem in the New Year

Vancouver, B.C- It’s an almost universal experience this time of year. We set lofty goals for ourselves in the spirit of New Year’s resolution-making, only to fall well short of achieving them a month or two later. Self-esteem expert, Dr. Kevin Solomons, thinks it’s time to re-assess the importance we attach to this task and learn a lesson from the great Mark Twain who said, “Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual.”

“The whole New Year’s Resolution exercise can really wreak havoc on our self-esteem. When we set this incredibly lofty and often arbitrary goals that no reasonable human being achieve - not to mention the fact that we usually set an artificial deadline for their accomplishment – we just set ourselves up for failure!” explains Solomons. “Then of course we end up feeling guilty about abandoning those resolutions come February - hardly a great way to start off the year!”

Instead, Dr. Solomons recommends that we re-evaluate the whole resolution-making process. Instead of using the New Year to beat ourselves up about what we weren’t able to achieve, why not resolve to build up self-esteem and improve quality of life? One way to do that is to choose a resolution that’s likely to be successful. People also shouldn’t view any resolutions they do decide to make as an onerous task that must be achieved on a particular timetable in order in order to validate our own self-worth.

Solomons continues, “Any resolutions you do make should be viewed as an opportunity to take control of your life and work on becoming the person you’ve always wanted to be – something that’s a life-long project! And finally, take the opportunity to reflect on all the positive things on your life. Appreciate yourself just as you are, rather than thinking of all sorts of ways you need to be ‘fixed’.”

Scrooged Over at Christmas: Lonsdale Small Business Handed Eviction Notice

Vancouver, B.C- Schlockbuster, an Alternative movie store with a client base of over 7700 customers located in Lonsdale on the North Shore has been handed an eviction notice along with several other businesses on the 228 block of Lonsdale, forcing the business to try to find a new location or close up forever.

Owner Randy Tarangul, who has run the store there for 8 years has been forced into making some drastic decision which will affect not only his loyal customers, but his staff as well, right before the holiday season.

“The only notice we received about this were some signs that were put up on the building that the block had been sold for development. We weren’t given anything in print. The block was sold to the building company Intracorp Vancouver, so we knew something was in the works, but we had no idea that we would be told to leave so soon. They handed us eviction notices December 1^st, and unless we can find another location in the North Shore area in a week, I’m going to have to shut down. There are so few small businesses like us left, it’s a real blow to the community and our customers,” says Tarangul.

Randy needs a rental space between 1000 and 1500 sq feet to accommodate the business, with a lease or monthly rental fee of between $2800.00 and $3000.00 per month on the North Shore and the task is proving to be extremely difficult.

“We are really hoping that someone in the community can help us find a new home for the business, so we don’t have to lay off employees at Christmas and start selling off our entire store. There are so very few of these alternative movie businesses left in our city, it’s just awful.”

Black Friday Events Prompt Author to Speak Out on Need to Re-evaluate Holiday Priorities

Canadian author Beate Epp feels strongly that we need to learn a real lesson from these events and look towards viewing the holidays as a time to bring communities together.

“I was just shocked to see how people could behave this way, at a time of year that is supposed to celebrate togetherness and good will. The events just remind us how out of hand our obsession with buying the next new gadget and electronic has gotten,” says Epp, who is also a family counsellor. “What’s the message we’re sending to children about holiday spirit when we behave like this? How to Beat the Christmas Blues by Giving the Gift of Self-Esteem

Vancouver B.C For most people Christmas is a time of great joy; it’s difficult for us to imagine anyone seeing the season as a reason for anxiety or depression. But for millions of people, those are exactly the sentiments they associate with this time of year. According to psychiatrist Dr. Kevin Solomons one of the ways people can cope with the negative emotions they associate with Christmas is to deal with one of its root causes: low self-esteem.

“People aren’t likely to just suddenly develop depression because it’s Christmas, but certainly an underlying condition can worsen with the stress of the holidays. People may store up all of the negative feelings they experience throughout the year, and Christmastime just ends up being the breaking point for them,” explains Solomons, an expert on self-esteem. “Because low self-esteem is a major cause of depression, this season in particular can be rife with triggers that can worsen the condition. So it’s important to try and engage in activities that enhance, rather than detract from, our own feelings of self-worth.”

Tips to increase your self-esteem

Spend time during the holiday season with people who make you feel positive about yourself. If your family dynamics are such that those close to you are likely to make you feel worse about yourself, then you may want to rethink your holiday plans and address how you deal with negativity in those situations.
The holidays often raise a lot of issues surrounding body image. Don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself just to fit into someone else’s perception of beauty. Enjoy the festivities and don’t place all your self-worth on how you look in some outfit. Physical perfection doesn’t translate into self-esteem; the quest for perfection is likely to result in the opposite outcome.
Don’t focus on the consumerist aspects of Christmas. The financial toll of holiday shopping can result in increased depression and anxiety. The constant barrage of messages telling us to “buy, buy, buy!” can make an already stressful time that much harder. Consider giving gifts that are imbued with meaning, rather than monetary value.

Dr. Solomons stresses that Christmas is the perfect time to foster self-esteem in others. Take time this season to let others around you know how much they mean to you, how much you value them personally and even professionally.

What else is new?”

“The goals of the Commission are laudable,” says Green, “but in these difficult economic times this kind of nonsense without accountability should not be tolerated by working Canadians or their parliamentary representatives. No more funding should be forthcoming for this project until an independent audit of all expenditures is completed and sustainable budgets are put in place.”

Edmonton Author and Advocate for Persons with Disabilities Proof that Respect for Human Rights must Start Locally

Edmonton, AB- For those of us in the industrialized world, the concept of ‘human rights’ is something we use in reference to developing countries. So much attention is paid to the more dramatic abuses carried out in foreign nations, but as Alison Neuman has made clear, the fight for human dignity is no less critical here at home, in Canada. Now Neuman is being honoured for her work with a nomination for a 2011 John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights Award.

Dealing with a rare muscle disease, dermatomyositis, herself, Neuman is only too aware of the challenges faced persons with disabilities on a regular basis. She’s also aware of the fact that most people don’t think about disabilities as a human rights issue. “As a person with a disability, I know how difficult it could be growing up to feel as though you were every bit as valuable a person as anyone else. And when you’re talking about a basic issue of human dignity, then you’re talking about something that’s clearly an issue of human rights.”

Alison Neuman has worked tirelessly to combat negative perceptions associated with persons with disabilities. She has been particularly active in her desire to improve the well-being of children and young adults with disabilities. Neuman is thrilled that the impact of her work is being recognized, “Edmonton was the first ‘Human Rights City’ in North America, so it’s very humbling to be by a city that has pledged to embody the spirit of universal human rights. And I think it’s incredibly positive disabilities are being recognized as such an important issue as well.”

Remembrance Day a Time to Honour Both the Memory of Our Brave Soldiers and the Innocent Civilians Who Perished

Vancouver, B.C For most Canadians, November 11^th is a day where we pay tribute to the sacrifices of soldiers who died in the line of duty. Author Helen Waldstein Wilkes feels that the day should also serve as a time to remember civilians who died in war.

Her experience writing Letters from the Lost: A Memoir of Discovery helped to remind her of the emotional impact that war has both on the soldiers involved and on the civilian populations caught in the middle. Using her own family’s letters that evoke their experiences at home and abroad during the Second World War, Wilkes created an account that has been heavily praised for its unique ability to awaken empathy in readers.

That is why I feel it’s important that we also take time to reflect on those children, those families, those ordinary humans who lost their life in war,” says Wilkes whose parents fled Nazi-occupied Prague. “Civilian populations inevitably get caught in the crossfire. The toll it takes is unimaginable.”

And while most of the memorials that will be visited this Remembrance honour those Canadians lost in the earlier part of twentieth century, Wilkes reminds us that losses continue to this day, “In the last decade we’ve seen countless regions torn apart by war and military conflicts. We now live in an increasingly globalized world, so when there is conflict in one part of the world we need to remember that those who are suffering are members of our larger family. Our empathy must extend to all who have suffered loss as a result of global and civil conflicts.”

More than Yellow Ribbons- Author Shows that out of Tragedy Comes Understanding about War

Regina, SK- For singer/songwriter Marny Duncan-Cary the reality of being in a military family and the challenges they experience all came together while watching the events of 9-11 unfold. She was horrified that they could be on the brink of another world war. Author Offers Advice on Halloween Costumes Challenges for Children with Disabilities

Author Alison Neuman wants to remind parents Halloween can be a great time to encourage inclusiveness while being creative. “Halloween is such a magical time for children (Halloween inspires imagination and dreams just like in Ice Rose) it’s one of the reasons I wrote Ice Rose. Neuman also notes that when creating costumes for children with disabilities – as with all children – it’s important to keep safety in mind. For children in wheelchairs or with crutches it’s important not to have a lot of fabric hanging down that could get caught in motors or wheels. Parents of children with visual impairments should be especially careful that costumes don’t obscure vision – opting for face paint rather than masks.

Beating the Odds: How a Passion for the Arts Helped Save a Young Canadian’s Life

Edmonton, AB- It may seem dramatic, or something from the movies, but when author Alison Neuman was told at the age of 15 that she shouldn’t expect to live past 21, she didn’t accept that diagnosis. She had too much to do.

Battling the deadly dermatomyosistis, a disease that causes overproduction of calcium, as well as excruciating arthritis, Alison was determined to achieve all of her dreams. Even if it meant doing it from a wheelchair.

“Without the support of my family, friends and those like the Rainbow Society in the community that saw my potential, I wouldn’t have been able to continue to fight this debilitating disease and achieve my goals as a writer, singer and dancer. I’m living proof that if you have the passion and drive, you can overcome anything,” says Neuman who is a member of Edmonton’s iDANCE, a dance group that is open to every person’s ability and challenges.

Alison recently published her first book Ice Rose an action-packed super agent story that pulls from her own life experiences and tells the story of a young girl Elissa, who struggles when an accident ends her dancing and puts her in a wheelchair. Alison wrote the story for the girl she was when she first needed to use a wheelchair to navigate around the world. She celebrates living a life that isn’t ‘normal’ and hopes that many young adults around the world will enjoy her new publication.

A Fresh Voice Brings a New Historical Fiction to the Marketplace

Slave Lake Fire Victim Who Used Poetry for the Healing Process to be Part of Alberta Arts Day

Slave Lake, AB- In the aftermath of the tragic fire that destroyed much of Slave Lake this past May, many of those left behind struggled to come to terms with the destruction it wrought. At this year’s Alberta Arts Day Slave Lake author, Dianne Tchir, will share the writing that helped her cope with the tragedy.

Having lost her home and all of her possessions in the fire that destroyed roughly 40% of the town, Tchir was left with incredible uncertainty and emotional turmoil in the months since the event. Poetry provided her with an outlet to help her better understand the meaning of those losses. The result was a series of ‘Firestorm’ poems and haikus that served an important and cathartic role in her healing process.

“When you lose all the material goods in your life, you’re literally left alone with your thoughts – that can be very difficult emotionally,” explains Tchir. “Getting those experiences and thoughts down on paper, as clichéd as it might sound, really helps alleviate some of the emotional stress and helps give purpose and meaning to what seems like an otherwise senseless event. Sharing what you’ve written also removes some of the isolation you feel after an event like this.”

Farmers Face Harsh Realities and Tough Decisions When Tragedy Strikes

It’s something that every small business owner fears: what will happen to my business if I become ill? The impacts of illness can be devastating for businesses, but the impact is ten-fold in the farming sector where there are few social supports in place to help keep these farms afloat during a major health crisis. Unlike traditional businesses, things like sick leave, succession planning, or transfer of ownership often aren’t an option – especially if the farm is family-run.

But it’s a reality that Alberta’s Wilderness Alpacas has unfortunately had to face head-on. This past year Wilderness Alpacas has faced a series of serious health crises, resulting in the difficult decision to close down their well-respected alpaca farm and sell-off their herd.

Co-owner Shirley Charters explains the impact, “Farming isn’t like other businesses; most of us are family-run. It’s no different for us than for any other family when someone gets sick – it affects us all. But in our case, all of our livelihoods depend on the farm, so if we can’t keep it running, you can’t keep your family going.”

Selling off their herd was a not a decision taken lightly, “It’s made for some heart-breaking decisions, but in the end nothing’s more important than family. We’ve grown to think of the alpacas as part of our extended families and so it’s so important to us that each and every one of them gets the loving home they deserve. Knowing that they’re getting the care they deserve will help make lighten the burden just a little bit.”

What Every Parent Should Know About School Phobia

Regina, SK: The back to school craziness has started, and while children may be excited about all the cool new supplies, fear and nervousness about what school is going to bring this year may be eating away at your child, and could have deep consequences if not addressed early.

Children, especially those that have been uprooted and have to start in a new school might not show immediately they are fearful of their new situation. That’s where the role of the parent needs to be supportive and communicative.

Beate Epp, a Saskatchewan author of the best selling children’s book The Magical Horses, a holistic nutritionist and a life counselor on family issues had these tips to give to parents whose child may have a slight case of School Phobia.

1. At home set a good routine before school starts so that they can be encouraged to carry on as normal, with school being part of the routine. Don’t make a big deal about how excited you think your child should be. This increases separation anxiety. Too many parents heighten the anxiety by celebrating school experiences too much- basically- make life boring!
2. Explain to your child that they have the tools to cope with their fears. If it’s fears of bullying- give them the names of people they can talk to and trust. Let them know that they will be supported. Teach your child to manage situations on their own, but that you are there if they need help.

3. Be involved and be active in your child’s life. Most importantly- Listen and talk to them everyday. They have valuable and important life lessons to give to you.

4. Find things that your child can really look forward to each day, and encourage them to find things that they can enjoy at school. Give them a task of finding something positive so that they can share that with you when the return home.

5. Tell your child that you love them and you are pleased with them for being courageous. Some parents initiate incentives in the home for each day their child goes to school without getting upset.
Set up a good framework that’s secure for them, but let’s them have their independence.

6. Get help and investigate if your child starts refusing to go to school. The longer it goes on, the harder it will be to combat the fear. Talk with your child’s teacher or other school attendees to get to the root of the problem so that you can help your child cope.

Why are Only 200 Schools in Canada Enrolled in Recycling Programs?

Edmonton, AB- By now most people know all about the three R’s: Recycle, Reduce and Reuse. Governments are offering more programs and incentives for Recycling. Low-emission cars and energy-efficient everything are helping us reduce needless usage. But what, exactly, are we doing to Reuse?

"Not much," says Linda Bodo, an Edmonton-based expert with two bestselling books on the subject. "Go to any store anywhere and you'll see hundreds of items sold in un-reusable, un-recyclable packaging. Most of what we buy in the store is designed to be used once. That has got to change.”

Linda notes that the cheap cost of consumer products combined with a total lack of incentives for manufacturers to use recycled products and poor government pressure, there isn’t a lot of motivation for the average person to consider upcycling.

Education could be used much more to connect with their students about upcycling − but isn’t. Linda applauds those that are taking upcycling and recycling to a new level. But there aren’t enough educators doing that.

“A company called Terracycle now runs an education and fundraising campaign in elementary schools across North America. Students who participate in the program are charged with collecting non-recyclable waste and send it into Terracycle who then turn around and use the waste to create products sold in the retail market. Students are
then given $0.02 per item for use as field trip admission and other similar things.
Though the program is popular in the States, with more than 30,000 schools are currently participating, the same cannot be said for Canada. Shockingly, only 200 schools are currently involved in the program and they only have one major sponsor: Kraft.”

So what’s holding us back from increasing participation in such obviously beneficial programs? Is it simply a lack of education on the subject? Education seems to be the central point. Bodo insists, “It doesn’t have to be some pie-in-the-sky project. Whole families can get involved – kids especially like to make sure nothing makes it into
the trash that shouldn’t. And fostering creativity with waste stream materials is infinitely self-satisfying for anyone that prefers projects that are less crafty and more cool.”

Kids that are educated in Upcycling tend to become strong advocates
of the idea. So the question remains, why aren’t we teaching Upcycling in schools?

Harper Government Refuses To Change Controversial Tax Policy

Edmonton, AB--Few areas in life cause as much stress as taxes. Everyone thinks they pay too much, and that everyone else isn’t paying enough. Governments are caught in the middle; we all want the best services, roads, hospitals, schools, and police, but no one wants to pay for it.

Graham Clews, a long-time chartered account based in Alberta, has an answer that would be a big help: make the corporate low-rate tax abusers pay their fair share.

"As things stand now," he said in a recent interview, "tax laws designed to assist small business are being exploited and abused by high income earners. Income taxed at 15% (an all-time low rate intended to help open and expand small businesses), is being used instead to fund huge private investments. Meanwhile, a single mother working to support her children is facing payroll deductions that are at least double the rate of tax paid by these often very wealthy corporations.

To quote chapter and verse: self-employed businessmen and professionals, through the simple act of forming a corporation, are able to bank up to half a million dollars of annual income after paying income tax at the low rate of fifteen percent, compared to the twenty-five percent starting tax rate paid by the poorest Canadian.”

What does this meant to Canadians who DON'T make these enormous incomes? It means they must stand by as successful businessmen, including lawyers, doctors, dentists, accountants etc., who may be earning hundreds of thousands of dollars each and every year, enjoy a long-term interim tax rate on their top dollars that is less than half that of the basic wage deductions (tax/EI/CPP) of the poorest Canadian taxpayer. In permitting this, the Canadian government annually sacrifices billions of dollars in tax incentives that vanish through an administrative loophole.

With a possible recession on the horizon, this is a subject that needs serious attention – and it's not getting any. Graham has written to the Prime Minister, the Finance Minister, all Conservative MPs, and opposition leaders. To date, other than a single ‘sluff-off’ letter from a PMO aide, not a single reply has been received.

In term of solutions about what the Finance Minister should do to halt the current exploitation, Clews had this to say:

"Tax policy is complicated, I know that, but this is a relatively easy fix. While that 15% rate is far too low to begin with, it was designed to help small businesses get going, expand, and provide jobs. It was not designed to offer obscenely low rates of tax to high income earners simply because they happen to be businessmen or professionals. Yet that is what is happening. To correct this, all that need to be done is to eliminate the high/low tax difference on corporate small business incomes that are not being ploughed back into small business assets. Ironically, a system is actually in place to do this but it’s not being used. So, let’s stop the pork barrelling, even up the investment playing field, and get those dollars lost working for all Canadians.”

Linda Bodo, a recycling expert based in Edmonton, with two bestselling books on the subject, had this to say in a recent interview with Breakfast Television:

"Parents feel incredible pressure to spend, spend, spend. School boards are closing schools, laying off teachers, increasing the numbers of pupils per class....the trends are easy to see. More and more often, students are on their own. Parents want their kids to have every advantage possible, which means they feel they should spend. But do they have to? I'm not so sure."

To avoid simply ‘buying’ into what the lists from school and ads tell parents, Linda recommends examining the following in your home first:

1. Look around--what do your kids have? Chances are, they've got the basic supplies. The pens and paper they used last year can almost certainly be used again. No child anywhere needs a new laptop just because they’ve moved into another grade.

2. Clothes can be upcycled into new outfits. You see this trend more and more. You take old objects and instead of chucking them into the trash, you make them into new things. It’s amazing if you start looking at patterns what you can do with clothing for school. Have the kids arrange their own Thread Spread, a swap of pre-loved clothes that will keep trendy labels circulating into the new school year.

Blogging can be a pain in the ass

Yes, Blogging is essential to stay in front of your audience, but I have to say that blogging can be a pain in the ass to keep up. Yes, I get all the social media- since I work in media- but seriously, when you spend an entire day writing, working in the book industry, trying to come up with topics to speak about can be a nightmare. I spend half my day looking at leads for my clients, trying to write media savvy topics and headlines and arranging book events and getting through the red tape with dozens of people. The last thing I feel like doing is blogging about the latest tips and tricks in my industry. I mean, I've just spent 6 hours doing exactly that.
I hand out tips to clients on what they can blog about- and many of them do just that and are seeing results. But for me? It's really tough to come up with new ideas when I've spent the entire day doing just that.

It might be different if I wasn't essentially a one woman show running my own business. I write blogs for other people- it's a craft and a very popular way to keep a business ahead of the competition- and really, how many CEO's do you know that actually write their own blog? Many profitable and cutting edge companies have assistants and paid bloggers to keep up to date. Well, I don't have the luxury of doing that, and yet, I have to practice what I preach.Because it can make a difference to your business.

So, as of today, I will do my best to at least update once in awhile ( not just press releases) and see what I can accomplish here on my blog. But be warned- it might not always be about publicity. Maybe it might be about my dogs, or my favourite chip flavour ( salt & vinegar). Just because....blogging can be a pain in the ass.

Activist and Author Reminds Canadians of the High Price often paid for Social Justice as we Celebrate Canada Day

Vancouver, B.C- Recent events in Syria have served as stark reminder of the high price paid by many around the world advocating for social change. And while we may not face the same violent reprisals of those who have bravely given their lives in the Middle East, activist Betty Krawczyk reminds Canadians that the situation is far from perfect here.

And the 82 year-old great-grandmother knows whereof she speaks. Krawczyk spent ten months in prison after being arrested for protesting the bulldozing of public lands. It was an act of peaceful protest that was criminalized by the BC government on behalf of corporate interests. And while the author of Clayoquot, Lock Me Up, and now This Dangerous Place is not comparing her treatment to the experiences of those in the Middle East, she feels there’s an important lesson to be learned by Canadians.

“Public spaces and public land are just that: public. That means they’re for the people, and we have the right, indeed obligation, to ensure that they’re protected. But all too quickly conditions can deteriorate to the point where peaceful civil actions become criminalized, or worse,” explains Krawczyk, “The brave people of Egypt, Tunisia, Syria and Libya have provided us with a reminder of what can happen when the space for public discourse is taken away.”

Appointment of Ambassador for Religious Freedom signals important movement towards gender equality for Canadian author

Manning, AB- This month marked an important step forward in ensuring equality of engagement in women in matters of religion. The appointment of the first Ambassador for International Religious Freedom, the Rev. Suzan Johnson cook, by Hilary Clinton signalled a commitment to recognize the roles played by women of faith. It’s a development that author Beverly Lein thinks is a long time in coming, and it’s a theme she’s chosen to address in her latest novel.

In Mary: Woman of Sorrows, Alberta writer Lein used the stories of Mary, mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene to examine the deeper issues of gender equality in the Bible. Delving into the King James Version of the Bible, Lein discovered that many of the obstacles faced by biblical women transcend time and are as applicable today as they were centuries ago.

“Women have long been left out of the picture when it comes to religion. They’re continually presented in a subordinate position to women, and oftentimes their experiences are discounted altogether,” says Lein. “There’s no doubt that these women played a much greater role than we’ve been led to believe, and I wanted to use this opportunity to bring women to the forefront. Historical fiction gives me the freedom to be able to explore these issues further and help make it relevant for a modern audience.”

On 400th Anniversary of King James Edition, New Novel Seeks to Develop Untold Stories of the Bible

Manning, AB- This year marks four centuries since the creation of what many consider to be the definitive word of god in the written form: the King James Bible. The fact that it remains the most popular of all versions speaks to its longevity. Its incredible endurance is due in part to the literary contribution of the writing itself. It’s that literary quality that inspired author Beverly Lein to use the text as a starting point for her historical fiction novel, Mary: Woman of Sorrows.

Lein, the author of two novels and one non-fiction book, has long been intrigued by the stories included in the Bible and, more specifically, what’s been left out altogether. The nature of the Bible has been such that whoever did the interpreting was, of course, going to be making critical decisions on what they thought should or shouldn’t be included in their version. Lein felt that the stories that weren’t getting told might be even more interesting than those that were.

“In the bible, there are a lot of things that go unsaid, backstories that are never revealed, and a lot of questions left unanswered,” explains Lein. “As source material the bible has literally hundreds of stories just waiting to be told, and thousands of characters waiting to be developed. What I wanted to do with my novel was pinpoint some of those missing elements and try and fill in some of the blanks in an interesting and engaging way.”

Lein’s epic, Mary: Woman of Sorrows, centers on the two ‘Mary’s most prominent in the bible and is available at Inkwater Books in both paperback and Kindle formats.

New Edmonton Secret Agent Day Camp Promotes Inclusive Environment for all Abilities

Edmonton, AB- “If you want change, ask for it,” is Edmonton author Alison Neuman’s motto as she organizes Camp Mission Access, a secret agent themed day camp for children ages 8-12 with and without a disability. Such camps are rare and need more locations. Already Alison has had interest from some Canadian and US cities to host more Camp Mission Accesses next summer. On August 4 & 5 and 8 & 9, 2011, in collaboration with The Glenrose School in Edmonton Alberta, Camp Mission Access will present workshops encouraging creative expression and great fun for all children.

Potentially deadly E. coli-related kidney infection concerns Canadian nephrologist in Europe

Paris, France- Already the deadliest outbreak of the virus in modern history, E. coli O104 has a particularly devastating effect on the kidneys that sets it apart from other strains. And as the current E. coli outbreak spreads beyond Germany’s borders, Canadian nephrologist and transplant expert Dr. Kim Solez – currently in Paris – says there’s growing reason for concern.

“This particular strain of e-coli is unlike many of the ones we’ve experienced in the past. The increased potential for serious kidney involvement means that it has to be treated differently than other outbreaks, and it’s important that people know the facts about it so that they can protect themselves,” explains Solez. “Of course since we don’t know the specific source, the best thing to do is make sure you seek medical attention immediately should you begin experiencing symptoms. You don’t want to delay getting help to the point where kidney failure necessitates artificial kidney treatments or a transplant.”

Potentially fatal haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) - which results in the breakdown of red blood cells and acute kidney failure – has already been identified in over 600 people exposed to E. coli. The condition can be particularly deadly in children under the age of 5 and has already resulted in 16 reported deaths. The kidney expert makes clear that this outbreak should not be taken lightly.

ActionCOACH Coaches start new trend of Practice Vacations for Business Owners

Alberta: With the Financial Post reporting last week that only 46% of small business owners are taking vacations, ActionCOACH’s Kent Boehm and Laurie Mcnaughton are offering advice on how to change that.

“Fear and mistrust stops many people from taking a vacation. They think that if they leave for one minute, their business will crumble.” That tells you 3 things: 1- They don’t have proper systems in place, 2- They don’t think much of their staff and 3- Their staff have not been managed properly,” says McNaughton, an ActionCOACH business coach in Edmonton.

“The ideal way to tackle this problem is with a 7-to-14 day ‘practice’ vacation. Take one or two weeks off, but stay in the city. Give someone you trust a number you can easily be reached, and let them know they can use it if they have to. Check in once a day if you have to. This ‘practice’ vacation will be a wonderful test of the people and systems you have put in place. And because you are in town & can be easily reached, you can rest easy, knowing you will be informed if something major arises,” says Kent Boehm, an ActionCOACH business coach in Calgary.

“And if something does arise, you will know exactly the weak points in systems and teams- and you can fix it with establishing a clear chain of command,” says McNaughton.

“The key,” as Laurie argues, “is to have someone in charge you trust. And he or she will only gain that trust if you allow him or her to make decisions, even the wrong ones, occasionally. Nobody learns in a vacuum. If your response to that is to say, ‘I can't afford mistakes’ then you are also saying ‘I will never take a vacation.’"

And what about losing customers? The general consensus is that if you lose a customer during a two week vacation, he or she was never really a customer anyway. Most people stick around for reasonable prices and great service.

As the statistics show, without a vacation, business owners will never be able to recharge their batteries to enjoy their business or their life.

Betty Krawczyk’s new book Raises questions about the source of the Human Will

Vancouver, B.C Prison. It’s not the first word association most of us would have when we hear the word ‘grandmother’. But for the family of eighty two year old great grandmother Betty Krawczyk, ‘prison’ is not a dirty word in relation to their matriarch. Several years ago Krawczyk along with members and supporters of her group “Women in the Woods” stopped the clear cutting of public forests in the Walbran Valley on Vancouver Island for three weeks. For this Krawczyk spent ten months in prison. Krawczyk’s book This Dangerous Place is the story of that time chronicling the psychological and philosophical import of those experiences and her struggle to stay focused on her mission while imprisoned.

From her prison cell Krawczyk recalls her childhood in Louisiana. She takes us from the chilling events of her family’s encounter with a deranged ghost that changed the lives of everyone involved, and sets these events of long ago against the backdrop of her experiences on the blockades and in prison.

“When you’re in prison, you have an awful lot of time to spend thinking about your life - about decisions you made earlier and the effect they’ve had on your current circumstances. And the important thing I discovered during this experience is that I have very few regrets” says the author and environmentalist. “I know that’s not something you expect a ‘senior’ to say about spending time in prison – but it’s true. And today I am feeling renewed and energized by the public protests and uprisings in the Middle East. It is the young people who are coming forward demanding equality and democracy. And most of the parents and grandparents seem to be supporting the young. And when the young and the old unite in common cause, nothing can stop them,” says Krawczyk.

Why Creating a Common Medical Language is Important and How it will Affect your Health

Edmonton, AB- Most people accessing the health care system have no idea they exist, yet medical classification systems are critical components of patient care. And while the task of ‘classifying’ anything seems like it should be simple enough, in reality the creation of these schemes are complex, involved, and ever-evolving. This June, scientists and doctors from around the world will gather at the 11^th Banff Conference on Allograft Pathology in Paris, France to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the creation of one of the most important classificatory schemes to be developed in recent years.

In 1991 Edmonton’s Dr. Kim Solez along with fellow pathologists met in Banff, Alberta to carve out classification system for kidney transplantation pathology. The Banff Classification system – which has since expanded to include transplant pathology for a variety of organs – has standardized the examination of transplant biopsies ensuring, that each pathologist looking under the microscope understands the results, and communicate those results in the same way.

“To someone on the outside, a classification system may not seem like a big deal – but nothing could be further from the truth. Think of it this way: if you’re sick and need to see a doctor, you’d make sure they speak the same language as you, right? Well, without standardized classifications in medicine, essentially every doctor the world-over is trying to talk about the same problem using a completely different language,” explains conference director Dr. Solez. “The Banff system of classification helps to ensure that everyone working in transplantation is speaking a common language. Not only does this help ensure the best level of care for patients, but it also ensures that scientific advances can occur more quickly because everyone’s on the same page, medically speaking.”

The benefits of creating and implementing this classificatory system extend into a huge variety of medical realms: from determining treatment plans and assessing their risks, to influencing the research priorities of scientists, to helping assess the outcomes of clinical trials, and even extending to the legislation and regulation of medicine. This year’s conference will play an important role in further advancing the system and helping carve out transplant research priorities for the future.

How not to approach an Agent

So, as some of you know, I am a part time literary agent. I have a few select clients that I have chosen to work with because I love their writing and I think that it's worth the time and effort to get their work published by a traditional publisher. I generally don't advertise my agent services because I earn a living doing publicity- which is my first love, but I am excited to be working on selected manuscripts.

Anyway, people seem to find me and send me lots of manuscripts. Some are referrals from current clients, but many are unsolicited. It's those ones that I sometimes have problems with.

Now, I have to say that for the most part I will offer up as much feedback as I can, but on occasion, when I get a manuscript that doesn't fit any of my submission requirements, those end up at the bottom of my manuscript pile and if they send me messages, I get pissed off.

In the first place I receive a ton of manuscripts a week. Coupled with my publicity business I am quite busy and I am extremely picky about what I choose to sell. It's not uncommon for people to wait months to hear back from an agent and many don't give any feedback at all. I'm usually pretty nice and will reply to all my inquiries in a timely fashion if possible.

Since I am also a writer, I know what it is to wait to hear back from someone and then find out it's a big fat no. As an agent I waited 8 months to hear back from a publisher- and it was a big fat no. So when someone submits a manuscript that isn't even in a genre that I'm interested in I don't think it's asking too much for them to wait.

So this brings me to my small rant. I received an unsolicited manuscript by someone who dared us to read their manuscript. The first note was somewhat humorous, so I passed it to my partner because it was non-fiction.
The manuscript was chock full of spelling errors (they spelled excerpt incorrectly) on the chapter sample so already it would have been a no. We are really picky about that kind of thing.

So, Brian didn't like the manuscript and sent a polite no thank you, best of luck, and wished the writer well.
So then I get a note that said:

"I really disagree with the assessment of my manuscript. Please read this, I think we can make a lot of money with this amazing piece."

So because I'm nice, I replied with the following:
"I currently have a backlog of manuscripts to go through, but I will try to schedule yours in as soon as possible and give you some feedback. Please note that I don't choose every manuscript based on a monetary value. Selling a book for me is more than that. I have to love and get excited about a project. Just FYI.I'll be in touch."
Even though I should have said no because I'm interested in fiction at the moment, not non-fiction.

I think that pointing out my backlog ( which I do have- and I'm trying to get through them) is very fair and actually more than other agents reply back. Most of them will give you dead silence. I also wanted to point out to the person that I don't just look for sales, I look for merit, quality of writing, and I want to get excited about the project. Because, as everyone knows there isn't much money in books these days!

So, 21 days later ( I still have a backlog) I get another note from the submitter. It stated:

" I know that you are super busy with all of your work, but I really think you should take the time out to read my book. I'm not asking for much. I'm sure that once you read mine you'll see that it's the best one you've ever read. My family and friends all love it, and I really think you owe me a reading as soon as possible. I think I've waited long enough."

Because I was in the middle of work, and hadn't found time to schedule his work in, I wrote back:
" Hi. Just a note. If I feel I would like to represent it. I'll let you know."

Yes, it was a don't call us, I'll call you. But I didn't think that I was out of line, given the fact that it wasn't in a genre I generally deal with, it was unsolicited, and I really didn't like the angle of the submitter. I don't think this person realized how an agent works, and how many unsolicited manuscripts cross our desks. Excellent writing moves me.
So, about ten minutes later I got a reply.

" I think you are being very unreasonable. And I doubt you have that many manuscripts anyway. I'm withdrawing my request- too bad, cause you are missing out on a ground breaking book."

Well. I guess it's my loss. Now, that writer wasn't bugging me so much, but I couldn't connect with the tone in the emails, and I did actually scan the manuscript and it wasn't for me at all. But before I could tell that writer, they got pissed off with me and ended the conversation.

Unfortunately, I think that writer is going to hear a lot more of those types of answers if they continue to submit their work without reading the submission guidelines they are given, without checking for spelling errors, and without a little patience. It's these types of writers that might be more suited to self-publishing, and most likely will self publish, and then complain when they aren't selling anything.

Writing should have passion, yes, but it should also have quality, spark, something that no other manuscript has- that it quality. It takes time to find an agent that will work for you and with you to sell your work. Being an agent is a grueling, arduous task that can take a long time with a lot of doors slammed in your face. It's one of the reasons why people ask an agent to sell their book for them. Because they want someone else to do the work while they hone their craft ( and to get them a smoking amount of money).

There are lots of pros and cons to having an agent, but if you do seek one out be prepared to be patient. Remember that they aren't getting paid for their time reading your manuscript. They don't get paid unless they sell a book, and that could mean hundreds of hours of reading unedited chapter samples and manuscripts before they find that gem in the bunch. Yours could be that gem. If you have a little patience.

( By the way- in terms of spelling and grammar- yes we have high standards,and I am the comma splice queen in my own work, but I can pick out errors in other people's work in a second, so don't think I won't notice!)

Hey there, yes I know, I know it's been FOREVER since I've posted something on this site. And I should because people seem to visit. I'm always telling my clients, make sure that your blog is up to date with something good on it because you just never know who will pop by.
Well I've got the same excuse as everyone. I'm busy. I'm busy writing, reading, working, and remembering to give attention to my dogs and my boyfriend, in that order.
But I think I'm back on track now. It's been a whirlwind since I last wrote- lots of ups and downs. Firstly I've still been watching horror movies, but my sister and I are planning to launch a new blog just for all of our reviews. It's taking a little while but we'll get it up- but that said do not, and I mean DO NOT watch the movie Room 6 from 2006. I think it's almost one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Really, it's horrible.

Yes, this movie is absolutely terrible. With such good actors, it's such a shame.I hate seeing talent wasted with bad writing, bad acting because of a bad script, bad special effects and bad filmmaking. Yes, bad is almost too kind a word.

But speaking of good, I'm thoroughly enjoying reading Bentley Little's The Mailman, an earlier book of his that is really creepy. I just love his style of writing. Sometimes I find some of the sexual scenes a little over the top but in many cases it is needed to set the tone. If you have never read Bentley Little you are missing out on great stuff. I am also growing quite fond of Brian Keene. His book Ghoul caught my attention and I just picked up a Gathering of Crows that looks really good. I love it when you find authors you can't get enough of. It's like music, and of course the latest Stevie Nicks album is ready to drop in May- and I can't wait!
If you know me at all, then you know she's been my favourite singer since I was ten. Always great to have new music to work to!

So onto the publicity aspect, since this is attached to my website, I suppose I should mention that we have some awesome new packages for people interested in publicity. It's my second year in business and we've had a lot of bumps but now we are on our way to great things and looking forward to some good press for people we love to work with. There has been so much happening in the world of books it's tough to keep track of all the changes, but that's what we are trying to do, so stop by my website and take a look, and pass the information along.

How many self-employed people actually have a business plan?

How many of you self-employed people are out there running their business day to day and just hoping for a check to arrive in the mail? I bet a lot of you. Especially writers. You spend half of your time scouring for a job and the other half waiting to get paid.

When I went into business for myself I just jumped in with two feet and didn't look back. I knew my business, I had some clients that I had worked with, and I just figured either it would work or it wouldn't. Regardless, I would be doing something that I loved. And I am. I just celebrated my first year in business and I'm not a statistic. So far.

I've never really given much thought to a business plan. I mean my business deals with authors and writing and publicity. What do I need a plan for. I either have clients or I don't. But recently I've been working on putting a proper business plan together because I realized that I'm not just self employed. I'm an entrepreneur, and a small business owner all rolled into one and without a plan who knows where I will be in 3 years?

So this week I didn't watch any horror movies ( other than those that I own) and I sat down and starting going through my plans for the new year. It really doesn't take long. It's actually quite simple. And I have one of my clients to thank for helping sort it all out. My client ActionCOACH business coaching works with small and emerging businesses to help them improve their bottom-line profitability. Yeah, yeah, sales jargon. But I'm a salesperson too. I sell my writing and publicity services so I fall into that category. So I'm going to sell you something.

Some good ones this week -some Christmas treats

Well, Christmas time is just around the corner so a couple of these have that Christmas flavour.

We'll start with The Thaw- Extinction Will Find You- by Mark A Lewis.
Here's the plot synopsis: A research expedition to the Arctic discovers that a melting polar ice cap has released a deadly prehistoric parasite.
With of course references to what a horrible planet we have and how we are destroying it. This concept is old and tired, but there are some cool moments in it. The parasites are creepy bugs, even if half of them are cgi. Of course we rarely see Val Kilmer in anything good these days- oh for the days of Top Secret. It's okay, but a bit preachy.

Wicked Little Things- Prey for Them by J.S Cardone
Synopsis: Karen, Sarah, and Emma Tunney are all moving to a small town in Pennsylvania where, unknown to them, in 1913, a horrid mine accident trapped dozens of children alive, underground. But there's a problem. They're still alive.
Hmm... well this would have worked if it made sense. And if the kids didn't look like weird kids with bland painted faces. And if the character of Ben Cross was more than one dimensional. Poor Ben Cross...I wish he would be in something decent. Dark Shadows is a long time ago. It's sad to think that horror movies are becoming the place where old character actors go to die. The weird part of this is that the Tunney story line might have worked but the blood lust of these kids just doesn't make sense. If this had been a revenge story it would have made much more sense. Instead, it was a film that lacked any scary moments and was spent half the time running through the shadows in a field. I really didn't care about these characters, and when the bad guy gets it- I didn't care because he'd only been in the film once or twice before with zero information given about him. So...wicked little things fails as a film to see, just because it really doesn't make sense!!!

Venom- He Never Hurt A Soul Until the day he died by Jim Gillespie
Synopsis: A pack of teenagers run for their lives through the swamps of Louisiana, as they are chased by Mr. Jangles, a man possessed by 13 evil souls who is relentless in his pursuit of new victims. This was based on video game.

I am always a sucker for voodoo movies, ever since my favourite episode of the Hardy Boys had them waking up in coffins in a New Orlean's graveyard ( okay, the dracula one is my favourite-but it's a close second!) I have to admit I fell asleep during this one. It wasn't because it was a bad film, I was just really tired. It seemed to be the usual fare- snakes and a voodoo curse on a guy who really didn't deserve it. From what I saw, the snakes were really cgi and there was a high body count. I fell asleep and woke up at the end, so I think there was one person left standing. So i really can't tell you if this was any good, but I think it was along the lines of I Know what you did last summer- because that's the same director.

P2- A New Level of Terror- The only thing more terrifying than being alone is discovering that you're not- By Franck Khalfoun
Synopsis: A businesswoman is pursued by a psychopath after being locked in a parking garage on Christmas Eve.
Yup, that's about it. But I have to tell you I really liked this movie. The main character did probably everything I would do if I got locked in a parkade. At first she comes off as a bit of a bitch, but I warmed up to her because gosh darn it she is doing everything she can to get out of there. And the villian in this- Wes Bentley is great as the creepy guy. His fascination with Elvis is quite funny and he plays a psycho very well. I have to say they covered a lot of bases with this and I found it very entertaining. Of course part of that may be the Enormous amount of continuity and goofs in this film ( Hello!! Camera crew! You aren't supposed to be in this scene!) The fun part for the cell phone is when it says TELUS- but we are supposed to be in New York. Hmmm... But maybe that's what makes this a fun little movie. That will teach you to stay late at work on Christmas Eve!! I recommend this as a fun Christmas style psycho flick!

Wind Chill- A road many have traveled...but few escape- by Gregory Jacobs.
Synopsis: Two college students share a ride home for the holidays. When they break down on a deserted stretch of road, they're preyed upon by the ghosts of people who have died there.
Okay, I really don't care that George Clooney and Steven Soderburgh had a hand in this as executive producers. That couldn't save the fact that I hated the main character and the movie was really disjointed. I hated her. She was such a bitch I wanted her to die. And there are DOZENS of continuity, factual, and revealing mistakes, not to mention plot holes in this thing. The only spark of imagination is when she uses the call box on the top of a telephone pole to call an operator- but that was it. And I still don't know how a bitch like her knew that kind of information. There seemed to be such a problem with the concept of snow in this film. Like the fact that when people walk in the snow there are generally tracks- that you could follow. And the car lights were on the ENTIRE time in this movie, even though they turned off the dome light to conserve the battery- but she can listen to the car radio while painting her toenails. Everything in this film was just bad. SIgh. I'm disappointed that when you get some talented people together they just miss the point completely. Pass.

The Unborn- Evil wants to be born now -by David S Goyer
Synopsis: A young woman fights the spirit that is slowly taking possession of her.
I was told that this was bad. And it was, but it's not an exorcism film- which I stay far away from- it's a dead twin in my head film. And that would have made it interesting- if they followed that line and didn't turn it into a weird exorcism film. References to Dr. Josef Mengele were interesting, but I don't know why they just didn't say his name. EVERYone knows who she was talking about. I think that Gary Oldman only appered in this film because the co-writer - from Dark Night asked it as a favourite. In all the roles I"ve seen him in, Rabbi isn't one that comes to mind. Oh well. There are some very creepy scenes very early on in this film that might redeem it. I had a coupld of jumps, but that was it.

The Uninvited- by The guard brothers
Synopsis: Anna Rydell returns home to her sister (and best friend) Alex after a stint in a mental hospital, though her recovery is jeopardized thanks to her cruel stepmother, aloof father, and the presence of a ghost in their home.
I have to say, I liked this film. It was well acted, had some creepy moments and I didn't see everything that was coming. I liked the characters in it and it was well done. I always like David Straithern, although he's always underused, and for a Canadian film it was really well done. Except for a ton of continuity issues- but some small that you really don't notice -well except that when a boat is tied up, it's tough to just drive away, and there are a whole bunch of date weirdness going on- maybe they shouldn't show laptops when your character is reading them out loud, especially when they don't match, and maybe if someone blows up holding a bell- it might be a little tricky to find the same bell unscathed in a box.
But besides that it was a fun little movie and I actually felt bad for some of the characters. It's pretty much the Tale of Two Sisters- Canadianized but I thought it was decent for the new settting.
So I would give this one a Yes.

Someone asked me how do I find time to watch so many movies. Well, as a publicist I work all day and a lot of the evenings writing, talking to press, and booking interviews. At around 10:00pm I turn off my computer and throw in a movie just to help me unwind for the day. And what better genre than horror or thriller? To some that may not be their idea of a kickback and relax time, but for me it is. So that's how I can watch a film a night. Scraping the Bottom of the Barrel: this week's flicks

Wow. Only had time for a couple of films this week.

I went off the beaten path this week on purpose and entered the horror/cult film section. I figure if there is a cult film, I should at least see if I can figure out why it got there. Some were just terrible, but others were funny-terrible. I only watched a couple. I couldn't take much more than that.

Thr3e- by Robbie Henson
Plot synopsis: THR3E (based on the novel by Ted Dekker)

Innocent lives hang on the whim of an elusive psychopathic murderer whose strange riddles and impossible timelines force three people into a mission to end the game before one or all of them die. The number three figures prominently in the story and most obviously seems to refer to the number of days in the unfolding storyline, but ultimately comes to represent something far more strange and significant.

Wow, what a mess of a movie. It started off all right, but then turned into a crazy mess that made absolutely NO sense whatsoever. I usually like watching Marc Blucas from the Buffy Days, but he's wasted in this film. And there are so many continuity problems you just start shaking your head in wonderment. Especially when key plot points rest on them. PASS on this one big time.

Zombie Lake- They're waiting for YOU somewhere BENEATH the Surface!- by Jean Rollin
Premise:In a small village, somewhere in France, German soldiers, killed and thrown into the lake by the Resistance during WW II, come back.

Wow, this was something that I couldn't decide whether to laugh at all the way or just wonder how the hell it got cult status. Yes, it's true that the director was so embarrassed about this movie that the credit is J. T. Lazer.
I'm not sure how a film gets a cult status. Maybe because it's just so bad? This is a french film, dubbed and the nudity alone would be worth the price of admission if it just wasn't so ridiculous. The best part is when all the nude girls are playing in an obviously murky and gross swamp, but the underwater scenes are clearly shot in a crystal clear swimming pool. I love that the zombies actually have green paint unevenly all over their bodies. And that they are apparently breathing as they swim underwater. There are so many goofy things in this film it is very laughable. The soundtrack is great, especially with the zombie and his apparent daughter scenes.

The 1970's clothing when it's supposed to be 1945 is great, and the stumbling zombies just make you want to yell- "Stop looking at the camera!!! Please!!!!" So yes, i thought this was very funny. The zombies all look like the Incredible hulk and the deaths are hilarious. I've never seen so much red paint in my life. I can see why you need to see it, but when you do, make sure you are doing something else constructive, or this will sap the life out of you. Not even the unbreakable bond between nazi zombie and his french daughter can keep you going. Weird as that is.
Is this the WORST zombie movie ever? A lot of people say yes. I could be one of those.
I have to include this insight from a reviewer on IMBD

ZOMBIE MAKEUP: green hands & face paint with movie blood, which often washes off in underwater scenes which seem to be shot in a swimming pool with a greenish curtain backdrop.

DE-ANIMATION METHOD: Napalm them to dust with a flamethrower! ZOMBIE FEASTING?: these are what I call 'necking zombies'. They don't feast in traditional Romero or O'Bannon sense; they simply chew at necks and drink blood like they are pretend vampires. Their victims, however, do NOT turn into zombies.
STORY: During the OP credits we see an attractive woman strip down for a skinny dip in a lake like a bad attempt to recreate a scene out of 'Jaws' or 'Piranha'. She ignores a warning sign by knocking it over. It's not a simple 'no swimming' sign mind you, but a skull and crossbones that would seem to indicate some reasonable level of danger. Needless to say, she gets killed by a zombie. Another village woman gets killed and her father pays the mayor a visit wanting it investigated.

The mayor tells a visiting reporter about the haunted lake with some mumbo jumbo about black magic sacrifices being done there and Nazis killed by the local resistance whose bodies were dumped there for hiding. Now the Nazis are back as zombies killing locals.

A van packed with a girls' basketball team strips down for full frontal underwater footage (while indescribably bad cheesy music plays) and the girls are attacked by zombies whose makeup is coming off almost as quick as the girls' clothes did. Inept horror movie cops are dispatched to investigate.
And can you believe it that this film was shot in ONE day? Yes. Yes, I can. Watch it. You just have to.

I Spit on Your Grave by Meir Zarchi
Premise: The film follows Jennifer, a writer who is working on a new novel and needs to get out of the city to finish it. She rents a riverside cabin in upstate New York to work on her novel, attracting the attention of a number of rowdy male locals. They catch Jennifer one day and strip her naked for the village idiot (Matthew) and rape her. Jennifer is later attacked and raped a further two times by the four degenerates, and her novel is also destroyed. But Jennifer recovers, and in her now-twisted, psychotic state, she begins to seek revenge on the men.

Uh yes. The only thing about this movie that isn't twisted is the way that she gets revenge. I guess i watched this because apparently this is one of those films you should see in the cult world. That, and I believe there is a remake in the works- though apparently the lead actress already did a sequel called I Dance on your Grave, where she is raped another 6 times. She must have some kind of weird fascination for that. Very weird.

This is a brutal film with several rape scenes that are awful, so be warned. It's really disturbing although I liked the death sequences of her attackers. The bathtub scene is so callous it's quite something. Amazing plot holes throughout- if you can give this film a plot- I know that the minute I arrive at the cabin I've rented to write in, I just peel off all of my clothes and dive in naked. And I would certainly never call the police. No way. Why not when you can off then all by yourself using your body and forgiving nature? Only see this if you've seen every other sick kind of film in this cult genre.

A Swing and a whole bunch of misses- last week's horror films

Well, some weeks you just have the worst luck. I'd say only one pick this week was worth watching, but them's the breaks!
So from worst to best:
Dead Clowns- by Steve Sessions- one of the reviews I read about this film was: " this movie wouldn't be good as a coaster" IYep I entirely agree. The cover art is the only thing good about the film. It's touted as an indie movie, but it's more like a home video- it's that bad. Please don't ever see this. It's not even bad in a good way, it's just terrible. There isn't even a poster for it because it's SO bad

Frightmare - Hide and Shriek by Ash Smith This is also called Paranoid for some reason. Whatever the title, it's bad. It has the usual premise-A group of high school seniors put on a haunted house to raise money for their senior trip, but when 3 people are killed they hunt for a seriel killer before the haunted house is shut down. This low budget, poorly acted and poorly written flick will scare you off the SECOND you turn it on. Believe me, I shut it off in the credits, but then turned it back on just to see if it was salvageable. Yup. Bad.

Alone in the Dark- by Uwe Boll- Why, why, why don't I read the directors before choosing something? I HATE this director and all his films. SIGH.
Premise: Based on the video game, Alone in the Dark focuses on Edward Carnby, a detective of the paranormal, who slowly unravels a mysterious events with deadly results.
I love Resident Evil, and that was a video game. This was supposed to be a fantasy thing, and maybe if you were playing the game you would like it, but as a film it sucked. Oh for the days when Christian Slater was in Heathers. SIGH. Pass.

Splice by Vincenzo Natali
Premise: Two young rebellious scientists are told by their employers to halt groundbreaking work that has seen them produce new creatures with medical benefits by splicing together multiple organisms' DNA. They decide to secretly continue their work, but this time splicing in human DNA.
What the heck happened to what should have been an interesting movie? It SUCKED! I could see how the special effects people won an award, but the characters just did so many things that were unbelievable it was ridiculous. And it really turned what could have been a cool examination of life and what we are doing with it, to a ridiculous love triangle that just wasted everything. Whoever thinks this film is a great piece of science ficion needs to have their head examined. It was just bad. I hope Sarah Polley makes some better choices moving forward. I think it might be too late for Adrien Brody. He hasn't had a good role since the Pianist. BIG PASS!

Dark Ride- the Last Ride you'll ever Take- by Craig Singer.
Premise: A group of six friends on a road trip stop off at an amusement park attraction named 'Dark Ride', unaware that a psychopath who brutally murdered two girls, has just escaped a mental institution and is seeking refuge there.
Yup, this one's claim to fame is probably Jamie-Lynn Sigler from the Sopranos and Campfire Stories. This isn't a terrible film, just quite boring. The psychopath in the asylum is actually quite creepy, but there wasn't enough of him. You only see his face once and it was a good one. Too bad that he spends the rest of the film running around in the dark. And the "twist" isn't much of one, since you pretty much know what's going to happen. It's not horrible, and has a good gore quotient, but it certainly fits with the 80's genre of horror film. Except it's from 2006.
The Hamiltons - Their Loss is Your Pain by Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores. I did not like this film. It was just really long and drawn out with nothing much going on. There were all these allusions to interesting back stories that never played out, and I really grew tired with it. There weren't even any good laughs along the way. It was just bad. I think the book was better.

And the pick of the week is Dorothy Mills- Evil Chose Her by Agnes Merlet
Premise: Jane Morton, a psychiatrist from Dublin in deep mourning following the accidental death of her husband and son, is assigned to work on the case of Dorothy Mills, a teenaged girl in a small village who tried to strangle a baby. After miraculously surviving a car accident, Jane discovers a village darkened by strange events and meets a very nervous Dorothy, who swears she never touched the baby. After analyzing the teenager, Jane makes a diagnosis of multiple personality disorder until the day that Dorothy speaks with the voice of David, Jane's dead son.

Except it's not really quite like that. It's much more involved, and I have to say that it was a very interesting film. It's got a basically all Irish cast and the acting is very good. This isn't a horror film, it's more of a thriller than anything else. If you are looking for gore- and death than don't look here. And there isn't anything to do with an exorcism in this film, although the marketing was set up like that- bad move, since it doesn't have anything to do with that, and I feel, cheapens the writing and plot. Dorothy is very interesting and I found that I was waiting to see how they were going to wrap it all up. It was a good little film.

How to handle unsubscribers from your newsletter/email list

I send out press releases and email campaigns on a regular basis. I find that generally, most people who don't want to receive your emails will hit the old Unsubscribe or Opt Out button without any problems.

But occasionally they might email you directly to ask you to unsubscribe. Now in the case of media, how should you respond to that?

A situation like that happened to me last week. I had an editor who, up until last week had opened almost all of press releases, when he suddenly unsubscribed. So I took the time to find out why. I emailed him and said that I had noticed that he had recently unsubscribed, and would he mind telling me why and how I could fix the situation.

Now some people will just not bother to answer, but if you've been building a relationship with them over time, they usually will. He replied that he was noticing that most of the news wasn't B.C based, that it was based in other provinces, and wasn't a national story, so he wasn't very interested. However, he did say that if it was going to be B.C based, too send it directly to him- not as a mailout, and then very kindly gave me a list of reporters he would like me to send my stories to.

Now not all of your subscribers will be so nice, but it really pays to contact them and find out how your emails and information can be of benefit to them- not you.

In the case of a newsletter, these days there is so much information on the web available, that people just don't want another piece of information dropped in their inbox. So you have to really work on the information that you put into your newsletter to make it stand out from the crowd. Don't write anything that isn't unique to your business or product. Make sure it's information that you can't find anywhere else and then ask the person who unsubscribed if they would like to contribute to the newsletter. Offer them an interactive role, ask them questions- what would they like to see? How often would they like it delivered? How will it benefit them? Of course, these are most likely questions that you asked potential subscribers before you started your newsletter, but it pays to revisit to keep a customer.

So overall, I would say choose which subscribers are the most valuable for you to keep and then do the best you can to connect with them.

Horror movies for Halloween- maybe

Okay, so this week was another mixed bag of hits and misses, but one that I really think is worth seeing for their sense of humour. It's the first time that I've laughed out loud in a good way with a horror movie in awhile.

So here they are for your Halloween viewing pleasure!

The Entrance ( inspired by true events) by Damon Vignale - This director generally works in tv, and has done a few series- and should probably stay that way. I am becoming very skeptical of these Film Festival winners- I don't see how there was a best director and actor on this movie. I don't know what true events this was based on, other than getting stuck in an underground parking lot. I can relate to that I suppose. And a creepy janitor. But that's where you lost me. Even the movie blurb doesn't know how to explain this movie, and keeps talking about the search for truth, fact and fiction, great truths unraveling. Well nothing unraveled for me. I still don't know what the point of this film was. There was one scary scene that was a little jolting, but other than that, I just didn't see the point of this film. Boring, long, and very little going on. Pass.

Evilenko- The chilling story of the Soviet Union's Most Notorious Serial Killer (There's something evil lurking in the woods) by David Grieco- Okay, this one was creepy and a decent bio-pic kind of film. Malcolm McDowell was the killer and he was quite icky. There were a few weird plot jumps, and at moments it seemed to loose it's flow, but it was sufficiently gruesome. This was based on David's book The Communist who ate Children, and his portrait of the serial killer Andrei Chikatilo- aka The Butcher of Rostov or the Red Ripper who murdered 53 women and children. This film is more of a snapshot of the insanity of Andrei, rather than a cohesive journey about the killings. It think it would have been really interesting to know that another person was arrested and served time for one of his killings, but I suppose with a life that had so many incidences, it was hard to pin down the key points for a film. I am wondering why they made him a member of the KGB, when in reality her was a shipping clerk. That seems a bit odd. And they took out his trademark eye gouging- which he was known for. The director also added in this really weird hypnotism thread in the film, like Andrei had a special power over these women and children, but that's never really explained, and it just seemed odd. When I read the story about Andrei, I thought there would have been some amazing scenes that would have been great in the film, but again, too much for a 2 hour film. So, it's a decent one, just a bit odd on the storytelling end.

DRIVE THRU- Hungry for a Killer Meal? by Shane Kuhn & Brendan Cowles. Okay, one of these guys watched way too many Freddy movies, right down to the reason for the killer. Come on guys- a neighbourhood group of friends who kill a member of the group in a fire and he comes back as a killer clown? Can you say predictable? The funny thing about this movie ( the killer of course, has a supernatural side to it) is that there are very recognizalbe actors in this film -albeit it mid listers- but recognizable. Larry Joe Campbell- from tv's According to Jim, plays quite a fun character of Officer Crockers, Lola Glaudini- who is very recognizable from Blow and Criminal Minds- a good actress and Melora Hardin- of The Office fame- Janice, as well as film. But unfortunately they are all secondary characters. The lead ones are all forgettable teen actors that all blend together. To the 70's kitsch toys that cryptic messages are left in- hardly worth mentioning. Wow, a Ouija board and an 8 ball. Creative. The only thing good about this film is the gore factor. It's very gruesome, but you may as well be busy doing something else for the rest of the film.

The Echo-by Yam Laranas- Uh, whatever the executive producers of the Ring and The Grudge were thinking didn't transpire in this film. The lead actor Jess Bradford is decent, but the plot is all over the place and can't decide what it wants to be. It's more of a thriller if anything at all, and there are a few good jumping moments, but there were also some HUGE plot issues. I still don't know why the secondary characters even saw the apparitions in the hallway. And the ending was lame. Pass

In a Dark Place - The real story is what haunts them by Donato Rotunno- All I can say is WTF? This is neither creepy nor disturbing, unless the gratuitious lesbian sex scene with LeeLee Sobieski is included. This started out as a nanny looking after disturbed kids, then it turns into a ghost thing, then LeeLee loses it and there are no explanations as to why. Her character is ALL over the place and it was really tough to care. So I didn't. I also didn't stick around until the end. BORING!! Pass

Dark Corners- Terror Breeds in the Shadows of the Soul by Ray Gower- Fangoria called this Bloody Puzzle. That sums it up in a nutshell. It's bloody but you won't have ANY idea what the heck is going on in this film. And after awhile it's so confusing you just don't care anymore. The draw for this film is supposed to be Thora Birch- who was great in American Beauty and Ghost World, but has since fallen off the planet in decent movies. It might have been because of this one. Seriously, I have NO idea what this was attempting to do. It's described on the blurb as inventive. That's not my opinion. PASS!

PICK OF THE WEEK!

REEKER- Evil is in the Air- by Dave Payne- If you can get past the name, this is hilarious and quite a good piece of writing. And of course anything with a guest spot with Micheal Ironside in it has to be watched! This is a grisly film with a really crazy supernatural style character- but amazingly this film ties everything together in an almost believable manner. Some of the one liners and situations in this film made me laugh out loud and even though it's the stereotypical group of students scenario, this one is pretty funny. The blurb really doesn't describe the film accurately at all, so ignore that. Yes, Evil is in the air- and if you want a fun and gruesome Halloween pick, then this is it!!

Press Release Sites- which ones are worth your time?

Ah, the word FREE linked with press release distribution is wonderful. Only not all sites are wonderful. Press Release sites in general serve a purpose for those looking to tell the world about their product, brand or news and now these sites offer SEO, online postings, Blog postings etc... but not all sites are created equal, and some really aren't going to help you out.
So which ones are the best ones?
As a publicist I've done a great deal of testing and measuring with releases. I seem to get 99% of my actual media bookings through my own database. This is one that I've cultivated and put together by talking to reporters, producers, and editors. I book the most through my database because they know me and my work. I have found that using the service Industry Mailout- as opposed to Constant Contact has worked the best for me. And it's a local Edmonton company- so I love supporting them. But I rely on using press release sites as well for that added exposure for my clients. So here is a run down on the ones that I've found have worked well for me.

This site is probably the best FREE site around. It has a good reach for both Canada and the U.S. You are only allowed one free press release a day, and it might take awhile to upload, but I've actually had reporters contact me to reprint my releases as articles, so you know they watch this one.With the free service you won't get stats on where it's been posted, but if you google the title you'll see where it's been posted.
If you want to pay for a release I'd try the 49 dollar one. They send you a list of online sites that they are affiliated with, including ones that have picked you up. It's a pretty decent list and about a month later they'll send you a stats breakdown to let you know how well the open rate was and whether in terms of releases it was a success or not.
I've tested and measured the $139.00 one, but other than a little more online coverage, I didn't see a huge pick up rate. Now that could have been the subject matter, or just timing. So it might be worthwhile to check it out. 24-7 is distributed to Canada and that's something to always look for. You can refine the tags and industry as well.
Your press release has to go through a review process, but it's pretty painless. Generally if you pay the cash, it's going to get posted.

I've had countless releases rejected from their stupid review system for the dumbest reasons. Once it was for having the words Las Vegas in the title. Well duh, the city was Las Vegas. What's worse is that the press releases they rejected are ALWAYS the ones that I actually book media with- so you know they aren't the brightest kids on the block. Because of my high rejection rate I've basically crossed them off my list now. It's out of Abbotsford and will only publish releases that fit the basic news-wire standards, so you need to know what you're doing. Avoid anything that just self-promotes and isn't news- it will get rejected. Make sure you have a good newsworthy angle. I've just started using this service, so I'm testing and measuring it to see how it goes. But it's FREE so why not give it a try. And it's mainly for Canadian news so that's a bonus.

This company is NOT free. They are a U.S based press release distribution service that was recently bought up by Vocus. It's a very good company if you want U.S releases. I do NOT recommend this for Canadian press releases - I've chatted with their representatives and even though don't suggest it for us. But if you are sending it to the U.S then it's worth it. And their prices are comparable. I've yet to book an actual interview, but their distribution is very good.

It's NOT worth the aggravation. Instead, I requested the PDF's of where they distribute to and checked out the sites myself. Half of them you can find yourself online. Seriously, they charge by the word. I don't know how they expect to compete in the distribution biz, but this is NOT how to do it.

There are many sites I haven't touched upon here, mainly because I have either haven't used them, or they don't really serve any purpose for me. If you know of a really good press release distribution site, by all means let me know and I'll post it up and try it for myself.

This week's Horror Flicks!

Okay so this week was a real mixed bag, no rhyme or reason, just thought the covers were interesting. As it is in the book world- watch those covers!! I got caught with a change of a cover, and I didn't pay enough attention to the plot so I ended up watching a film I had already seen. I HATE that!

So here are the ones I watched this week:

The Burrowers- Evil Will Survive by JT Petty- Do you remember how hopeless you felt watching Eden Lake or the Mist? Well this has the exact same feel to it. I won't give away the ending, but you aren't going to be happy go lucky at the end, that''s for sure. And I'm fine with that if the writing is good. And I'd have to say it was pretty decent. It's a Western and I'm not the biggest fan of those, but this one had some good moments in it. The acting was well done and the creatures were very creepy. It reminded me of a Bentley Little novel, just weird enough to make you a little squeamish and keep watching. So I would recommend this one if you want something a little offbeat and icky!

Chicago Massacre- Richard Speck- 9 Nurses, 1 Survivor- Michael Feifer- Okay, the instant I saw the trailers I realized that this was a big mistake.They were all 'video' remakes of the worst mass murderers in history- including the Black Dahlia- so you know this is going to be quality. I lasted 15 minutes before I had to shut it off. And I usually watch the crappiest movies all the way through, but I could NOT watch this. I think it might have been the hokey, twangy, banjo music in the background for EVERY scene. It did not stop. And the acting was horrible. I don't know what I was thinking. So PASS on this one. Really. Don't even look at it.

Dark Floors- Don't Get off on the Wrong Floor by Pete Riski- Well the tagline says it all. This was a Ghost House Underground production and I find these can be really hit or miss. I still don't know how I feel about this. I generally liked the characters, except for the blonde nurse who was really trying not to let her Irish accent come through. She was just a bit annoying. I've always been a fan of hospital films and this one did a very good job with a kind of fantasy/time-warp/time shift/world parallel film. But I didn't understand it. I still don't understand it. it had good special effects and it was well done. If I could understand it. It's not that it's complex, it just doesn't make sense. You'll see what I mean when you ponder the statement " I want the red crayon" and "I want the blue crayon". If you watch this, please tell me what that means. It's a good movie, I just need help with it.

The Gravedancers- Unrest in Peace- by Mike Mendez- This is from the After Dark Horrorfest- one of 8 films to die for series. Again, these can be hit or miss. The start of this film reminded me of a really bad tv movie- like anything they show on W, and I was certainly getting a lot done while it was on. But then about mid-way through after all the talking and dancing on the graves it started to get much better. The ghosts were really chilling and there were some really good moments. The body count was really low, but you can't have everything. So it was good, but then the ending sucked. It did one of those IT endings where you just shake your head and wonder why couldn't they have done anything but that. So, it's not really worth your time.

The Children- You brought them into this world, They'll take you out- by Tom Shankland. I saw this a long time ago, but the cover was different and I got sucked in again. This is a pretty decent film though, and the kids in this film are pretty brutal. You are never sure what the heck is making them ill and what is really going on here, but if you want some evil children- then this is the one to watch. Another reason to read the back of the movies. Because I forgot to.

The Gathering- The Horror is real. The Terror is Eternal- by Brian Gilbert- There is actually a star in this film, Christina Ricci and it's a nice little movie. I like films that take a different look at religion and the crucifixion and I really liked how this came together. The story isn't shocking and terrifying like the blurb says, but it's a tight plot with some really interesting 'a-ha' moments that I really like. This is definitely one to enjoy. The writing is smart and there is a good body count. So yes. I recommend this one, but is a thriller, not a horror film.

and the final one this week
Devour- Don't Get Mad. Get Evil- by David Winkler-Okay I only picked this up because it had Jensen Ackles in it. I also like Shannyn Sossamon ( A Knight's Tale and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang). But other than that this movie pretty much sucks. It is like a computer version of the Ring without any of the scary parts. It's also like the Game but none of this really comes together. And there is a really creepy incest sort of deal as well. Jensen is in the film all the way through, but that's the only reason to watch this one.

On a side note, I'm looking forward to meeting the horror master himself Robert McCammon on Sunday at the Surrey writer's conference- I'm taking a few of my books that I hope he'll sign and will be taking a writing class with him. Looking forward to it!!

This week's Horror Movies- a flick a night!

Have to say I'm enjoying the flicks rented from D-video in Burquitlam. They have a very large horror section which of course is great- although not like The Lobby in Edmonton. I have yet to find a place that beats Kevin selection!!

This week on tap was:

Rob Zombie's Halloween II- I didn't like the first one and I didn't like this one. I think Rob gets the prize for the most uses of the word "fuck" 18 billion times. It just doesn't bring a lot to the dead franchise. Really hoping there won't be another one.

Dance of the Dead by Greg Bishop- This was done by the makers of 30 Days of Night ( which I really like), and The Grudge ( a decent film). So what happened here? I'm still not sure. It was trying to be a mix of Carrie, Shaun of the Dead, 28 days later, Pretty in Pink and I think every zombie movie ever made.
That's why this fails. It doesn't know what it wants to be. If it had stuck to the premise of the "dance" part it might have had a chance. I liked the idea of music making the zombies stop attacking, but it was never used properly. And the jokes were flat with stereotypical characters that just didn't bring a lot to the film. Too bad- the trailers on the Ghost House Underground look decent. But this one didn't work.

Cry_Wolf- You Lie You Die- by Jeff Wadlow- Okay, this one I actually liked. It's a bit of an old premise- the usual students in preparatory school situation yada yada, but this one had some interesting twists to it. I didn't even realize that Jared Padalecki of Supernatural fame was in this film- so that was great. However the worst miscasting on the planet was that of Gary Cole as a British dad. Yes you heard correctly. British. And his accent was horrendous. Thank god he wasn't in it very often. And here I thought the other character played by Jon Bon Jovi would be the worst- but he actually played his role well. It did fall flat with the whole texting thing- that wasn't really done very much so it missed the mark there, but it was a fun horror flick, I enjoyed it!

Next Up- Happy Hell Night - They'll be Screaming Their Heads Off!! by Brian Owens. This had promise. The three actors across the top of the box were Darren McGavin, Sam Rockwell and Jorja fox. But don't blink because you'll miss all three of these actors. Instead you will have to watch all the other untalented ones. Poor Sam Rockwell got 3 words, and Jorja places a slut for about two seconds. It's a terrible film from start to finish- BUT the theme song will stick in your head for hours. Yes, you too can sing Happy, Hell Night forever. That's about the best thing about this disappointing slasher flick.

Maniac- I warned you not to go out tonight by William Lustig. Well I tell you this guy did his homework. It's the perfect flick for learning about how a serial killer works and thinks. The producer Joe Spinell ( Rocky and The Godfather) is one of the creepiest guys I've ever seen in a slasher flick. And Tom Savini did a great job for special effects. I have to say I haven't seen a head explode like that in years. This is a long, character driven movie, but with a good body count. Just don't be tired before you start watching because you will fall asleep. But I think this is worth seeing if you want a good 1980's flick with a lot of gore and violence.

Creepshow III- by Ana Clavell and James Dudelson- So who knew there was a third installment of this franchise? I think I must have been sleeping in 2007 or it wasn't released on the big screen. I think this was an HBO production but all I can say is fun! I liked the fun story and the characters. For an entertaining movie that you don't have to pay too much attention to- this is perfect. A little Alice in Wonderland in Suburbia.

Last film- on thursday night will be Deadgirl by Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel. My sister watched it and said it was worth viewing, so I'll let you know what I think. The reviews were very mixed on it- some thought it was brilliant, others not so much. So I'll see what I think and let you know!

10 ways to build your platform

Well, it's been awhile since I've written and that's because it's been a super busy month. I moved to B.C and signed up a few new clients. In October I celebrate my one year business anniversary and I'm thrilled at all the support I've had from publishers, authors, business people, entrepreneurs, and agents. It's been a huge learning curve, but it's only getting better. I have some new team members and we are organizing some great events for our clients. I have to say that for the most part I really love being in business for myself. Granted, there are times when I have to really push myself to keep to a schedule ( as the tennis courts often beckon in the middle of the day), but that is also a perk.

So let's get to the platform part. You can also find this in the new Writer's Market 2011- but it's something I base my business on, and you can as well.

1. Create your own website ( Wordpress- is great and free), keep it current, with a blog and other updated content, and make it interactive with forums, contests, surveys, newsletters, a guestbook etc...

2. Write articles, stories, op-eds, and even letters to the editor for magazines, newsletters, and other print publications to reach your target audience.

3.Contact other high-traffic websites frequented by your target audience, offer to guest blog or contribute content to them (even for free), link your site to theirs, and participate in their networking forums.

4. Position yourself as the go-to source for information regarding your area of expertise by joining related professional organizations.

5. Send periodic press releases about yourself, your activities, or some timely aspect of your work/field to targeted print and broadcast media, and offer to sit for an interview- you might be surprised by the response. ( You want to plan about 2 a month- and don't forget all the free sites)

6.Hold a publicity event- something fun and include the media

7. Give talks, teach classes, offer workshops about your specialty at libraries, schools, churches, and online- and let the press know

8. Get involved as a volunteer or board member with non-profit organizations- they could be great marketing partners

9. Partner with or co-author a book with a well established, widely recognized expert or celebrity, or try publishing your book through an established franchise like the Dummies or Chicken soup serials, where your personal platform is less of a factor

10. Post your own book trailers and other video content on YouTube, create your own podcasts, or publish your own ezine.

And here's the best tip of all. Consider hiring a publicist to do all of that for you. I know a good one~

How to find time to promote your business and your blog

I am in the middle of a move to B.C at the moment. The entire office is in chaos with boxes and separate piles for recycling, garage sale, donations, clients, and my work. The living room is full of boxes, and every evening has been spent sorting and packing.

On top of that, I still have a business to run, with all that it entails.

That means administration, delegation, following up, making phone calls, keeping in touch with my clients, and oh yes, updating my blog. And that I have to say is a real pain in the butt.

I have everything linked, so that it all goes to twitter and facebook etc... but it's finding the time to jot a few words down so that people who might visit my site can see that it's active.

That plays more of a role than I realized.

Recently after sending out a press release I was informed by a television station that my client hadn't updated her website in 3 months, and that didn't make him want to book her. I couldn't believe that blogging had become such an important factor for press bookings. But it has.

So far I haven't sent out a single press release about my company. I simply haven't had the time. I'm too busy working on the clients I already have to promote my business.

And to a high degree, that has suited me just fine- I'm thankful for the referrals I've received, and I show up when someone is looking for publicity.

But I suppose it is time to practice what I preach. I help my clients by making sure that their blogs are updated, I guess I should do that for my business!

So how do you make time for your blog?

1. Set your google alerts to items that you like to write about or discuss. When it comes into your inbox, you can click on it and instantly blog about it. It's great when you can't think of a single thing to say.

2. Make sure your blog is linked to all your other social media sites, so you don't have to spend time uploading to every site

3. Set time aside 3 times a week ( minimum)- say 1/2 an hour to upload a blog, and comment on 1 other blog so that your name keeps showing up everywhere

4. Your blog is your personal site- add some personality!

5. Don't forget to promote your business while you are promoting everyone else.

6. Don't put your client files in boxes until the very end of your move. Trust me. You will regret it!

It's Summertime- now's the time to send out all your cool pitches to act as fillers for radio, tv, and print! Now wish me luck for this move- it's a doozy!!!
